Peter Pennoyer, FAIA

Founding Principal

PETER PENNOYER, FAIA, is an architect, writer, educator and the founding principal of Peter Pennoyer Architects. He has co-authored, with Anne Walker, five books on American architectural history and is an adjunct professor in the Urban Design and Architecture Studies program at New York University. He uses his scholarship and knowledge of New York City to participate in the civic dialog among neighborhood groups, professionals, and government agencies by advocating for positions and designs he feels reflect the values of his firm: architecture that is contextual and respectful to the fabric of the city.

Peter is president of the Whiting Foundation, a nonprofit that supports writers and scholars, is a trustee of the Morgan Library & Museum, and is a member of the National Register of Peer Professionals in the Design Excellence Program of the General Services Administration. He has served as chairman and board member of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art and in 2014 he was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. Peter’s lectures and presentations have reached audiences across the country and cover topics ranging from architectural history and preservation theory to current practice. He was recently honored by the Preservation League of New York State with the Pillar of New York Award for his research and books on historic architecture and by the College of Charleston with the Albert Simons Medal of Excellence for historic preservation and traditional architectural design.

Peter is a graduate of Columbia University (B.A.) and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (M. Arch.). In 2017, he received an Honorary Degree of Doctor and Fine Arts from the New York School of Interior Design. Peter and his wife, interior designer Katie Ridder, have three children and live in New York City and Millbrook, NY.

Jennifer Gerakaris, AIA

Principal

JENNIFER GERAKARIS has been a principal at Peter Pennoyer Architects since 2011 and has managed large-scale residential projects ranging from new construction to historic preservation to full gut renovations. Jennifer’s expertise and her collaborations with consultants and interior designers have enabled her to successfully manage large teams and tackle some of the firm’s most challenging residential commissions. Her involvement in her projects encompasses all aspects, from initial concept to design through final construction documentation and supervision. Jennifer recently led her team through one of the most complicated residential projects in the firm’s history: the reconstruction and combination of two landmarked row houses into one 22,000 square foot structure on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.  Jennifer’s current projects include the restoration and renovation with new outbuildings of an historic estate in Massachusetts, a new Shingle style house on Long Island, and a townhouse renovation on the Upper East Side.  

Jennifer received her Bachelor of Architecture from the Pratt Institute School of Architecture. She is a registered architect in the State of New York and is a member of the American Institute of Architects. Jennifer lives in Brooklyn, New York with her husband and three children.

Gregory Gilmartin

Principal

GREGORY F. GILMARTIN is revered by his peers as a brilliant architectural designer. Among his design credits at PPA are many of our most important commissions including Drumlin Hall, Rowdy Meadow and 151 East 78th Street, an 18-story apartment building in New York’s Upper East Side.

Gregory worked at Robert A. M. Stern Architects while pursuing his studies at Columbia University in the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. He contributed to several RAMSA projects and co-authored New York 1900 (Rizzoli, 1992) and New York 1930 (Rizzoli, 1994). Known for his draftsmanship, Gregory’s drawing is included in Contemporary Architectural Drawings (Pomegranate Artbooks, 1991).Gregory is also author of Shaping the City: New York and the Municipal Art Society (Clarkson Potter, 1995).

Thomas P.R. Nugent, AIA

Principal

TOM NUGENT has worked with Peter Pennoyer since the 1980s when they attended Columbia University together and has been a principal at Peter Pennoyer Architects since 2006.

Tom’s experience has made him an expert at directing complex projects that span new construction and the adaptive reuse and renovation of historic structures. Three of the firm’s award-winning projects were supervised by Tom: Drumlin Hall, a new Federal style house in Dutchess County; the interior reconstruction and exterior restoration of an Italianate row house in the Greenwich Village Historic District; and the reconstruction of a brownstone in the Upper East Side Historic District. 

In addition to residential projects, Tom has led teams in renovation and preservation projects for institutional and commercial commissions that include the redesign of the Metropolitan Opera Club at Lincoln Center and the 1991 renovation and adaptive reuse of The Mark Hotel in New York City.  His renovation projects for historic clubhouses on the Upper East Side of Manhattan demonstrate his commitment to preserving the integrity of historic buildings while also reinventing them to embrace modern standards.

Tom’s current and recent work includes a new Arts and Crafts style house in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, the renovation of a penthouse duplex in the Flatiron District of New York City, and a new house in Newport, Rhode Island. 

Tom graduated from Columbia University, is a registered architect in the State of New York and a member of the American Institute of Architects. He lives in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, and likes to go hiking on woodland trails in the lower Hudson Valley with his intrepid Springer Spaniel, Effy.

Tim Kelly, AIA

Principal

Tim Kelly has been with PPA since 2005 and established the firm’s Miami office in 2010. Tim has a keen eye for design, extraordinary graphic abilities and a deep commitment to building science and project management. Tim’s mastery of architecture which spans the range of skills required to design and create buildings has lead him from limited renovations in his early days with the firm to new buildings and expansive commercial developments.  Bring his deep knowledge of classical and traditional architecture, Tim has shaped some of PPA’s most noted projects.

Tim’s graphic skills, where he employs hand-drawing and cutting edge rendering software is recognized in the profession and lead his appointment as an adjunct professor in the University of Miami Architecture Program. His renderings illustrate the firm’s book: Rowdy Meadow: House, Land, Art, published by Vendome Press in 2021.
