Lenox Hill Townhouse

Lenox Hill Townhouse

In returning this 19-foot wide Italianate brownstone that had been divided into apartments back to a single-family home, PPA entirely rebuilt this 7,500 square foot house behind a restored street façade. Taking cues from an adjacent brownstone — the best preserved of the original strip from 1872 — PPA brought back the house’s stripped details and added new ones. Inside, PPA reoriented the rooms around a new center stair and designed an elegant enfilade of arches through the parlor level. In the spirit of old New York, the warm hues of the wainscoting and trim, all in dark oak, evoke the intimacy of a nineteenth-century Italianate house while Jeffrey Bilhuber’s multilayered decoration invigorates the rooms with color.
