PPA’s redesign sought to capture the Jazz-Age exuberance of modern classicism and such glamorous interiors as the fabled steamship Normandie with a living room that hovers over the East River. Throughout, decorative details including the rosewood fireplace mantel, moldings, high contrast colors and metal door grills in the new octagonally-shaped gallery celebrate the geometry of Art Deco design. Metalwork reclaimed from an apartment in River House was salvaged and recast as ornament. The kitchen, with a custom-designed range hood and ash cabinetry, was designed as a luxuriously paneled room. Victoria Hagan’s use of lacquers, parchment, and contrasting colors and textures enhances the Art Deco aura of the rooms.
