Contemporary Classicism on Park Avenue

The owners of this apartment designed by J.E.R. Carpenter in 1914 entrusted PPA with revamping the pre-war plan for modern living, giving it distinct entertaining and private areas while creating an intuitive flow throughout the space In the public area, PPA opened the living room to the dining room; a pair of double doors and a pair of Doric piers with softly rounded corners delineate the salon, which divides the extra-long living room into two open areas better scaled for furniture groupings. Off the front hall, PPA broke up the length of the wide bedroom hallway, giving each room-like section a specific architectural character. Throughout the apartment, PPA maximized ceiling heights and with new lighting to showcase the owner’s art collection. Inspired by the ironwork of Louis Sullivan, the glazed entry door is overlaid with a screen wrought in a circle-and-square pattern, a motif worked into other metalwork designs throughout the apartment, including verre églomisé screens by artist Miriam Ellner. Luxurious materials, like gray onyx, Black Forest marble, and metal inlay in geometric patterns define the residence’s art deco character. PPA worked with interior designer David Kleinberg to bring stylized glamour to the interiors.
