East End House

East End House

Set on the shore in East Hampton, this summer-turned-year-round house has an aesthetic foundation in the shingle style tradition, with a contemporary overlay suited to the owner’s tastes. The house is composed in the vernacular of soft shapes, gambrel roofs, and intersecting eaves—the patent interplay of austere and playful. Intentional moments of blooming volumes and clean lines give the house a more contemporary character, like the dramatic curved glass windows in the kitchen that provide 180-degree views of the water; or the double-height entry hall, which is  paneled with simple strapping  to rationalize the space with geometry and structure.

Our client wanted a house that would accommodate his expansive program for hosting large gatherings. PPA planned the layout around the generous family room at the center of the house and household activity. Each of the half dozen guest bedrooms is oriented towards a different view to give each visitor a unique experience of the property. In the basement, a full entertainment suite includes a spacious lounge, bar, audio-isolated music practice room, theater, golf simulator, gym, and spa. PPA worked with Hollander Design Landscape Architects to craft multiple outdoor entertaining areas and a secluded tennis court. The interior design was done by GWdesign.
