Upper Fifth Avenue Apartment
Located in a J. E. R. Carpenter-designed building overlooking Central Park, this gut renovation involved combining two units into a 6,000 square foot apartment. PPA designed a long entrance gallery to access the public rooms and turned an awkward spot in the plan into an elegant octagonal hall linking the gallery, kitchen and dining room. Understated moldings and baseboards with lean profiles add an Art Deco quality while details, such as the gridded leather walls of the small study, create an element of whimsy — a quality that is enhanced by Katie Ridder’s colorful decorating palette. The servants’ quarters were incorporated into the large eat-in kitchen with a built-in banquette.
