New Villa on a Historic Estate

PPA drew inspiration for this new house, located on the grounds of a historic estate in eastern Long Island, from the Mediterranean-style villa that has anchored the twelve-acre property since 1912. Designed by Beaux-Arts-trained architect Grenville T. Snelling, the main house, known as Minden, has been well maintained past its centennial. The architectural language of this local landmark—creamy stucco walls, red-tile roof and overhangs supported by deep muscular brackets, and patterned, wrought-iron railings—provided PPA with a template for the design of this 8,000-square-foot “carriage house.” Governed by overall symmetry, the north-facing entrance façade is anchored by a two-story pavilion with tall, narrow windows that protrude slightly from the plane of the house. The architectural details, including the rafter tails and eaves, roof pitch, trim, shutter cutouts, balcony railings, and windows, were all inspired by the main house but carried out with a sparer touch. PPA organized the public rooms downstairs in a flowing plan anchored by the living room. The centerpiece of the house, it features a large, bowed bay facing the garden and is exotically decorated with a stunning Iznik-patterned wallpaper by Iksel Decorative Arts, as well as Afghan walnut jali screens hand-carved in Kabul, Afghanistan. Katie Ridder Inc. gave the new house splendidly bright and fresh interiors, full of vibrant color, lively patterns, an exuberant mix of furnishings, and contemporary art.
