New Upper East Side Townhouse

Located on one of the Upper East Side’s most elegant streets, this new townhouse replaced a 19th century rowhouse that had been stripped of its historic integrity over time. In its design, PPA pulled the street front out to the lot line and wove a new contemporary Georgian facade into the much-loved streetscape of classical townhouses by the likes of Delano & Aldrich, Cross & Cross and Mott Schmidt. The use of Indiana limestone sets the house off from its predominantly brick neighbors but visually relates it to the Vincent Astor townhouse across the street. At the same time, features such as string courses and cornice lines respect and align with elements of the adjacent houses. Engaged columns are elliptical in plan to allow for the expression of their full sculptural beauty.
