Long Island House
For this year-round 15,000 square foot house for a young family, PPA was asked to design a place capable of hosting large gatherings and guests but, at the same time, provide intimacy for quiet family weekends. PPA organized the program in three narrow masses at angle with one another with long porches and designed the house to be only one room deep on the main level. Simple gables held back from the first-floor roof line allowed for unbroken eaves and balconies carved out of the roof. The interiors, decorated by Victoria Hagan, are calm and disciplined with each room centered on large double hung window, some of which are grouped in bays that swell onto porches. Round vaults mark the intersections of long axes and the custom-designed door hardware was milled to PPA’s specifications. Garages are accessed through a porte-cochere.
