House in Eastern Long Island
Once a tennis club for a beach-side community from the early 1900s, this house was transformed into a luxurious beach cottage — the center of a family compound. Taking cues from the low-slung hipped roof and tucked-in dormers of the main house, PPA used the same simple crisp lines of the shingled vernacular for the new pool pavilion, exercise shed, guest cottage and garden house. Inside, PPA retained original features, including the beams and a screened porched that now serves as a summer dining room, but reconfigured the over-scaled stair so that each of the upstairs bedrooms would have a bathroom ensuite. Jacques Granges’ color palette and the simple lines of PPA’s design give this retreat a relaxed and informal quality.
