House in Carmel Valley
Set in the hills of a vast land conservation-driven development east of Carmel, California, this new house in the rustic style was designed in its massing and materials to blend with its context — a varied landscape of woodlands, savannas and grasslands. PPA used harvested teak, copper, and natural plaster to form the basis of the naturalistic palette of the house. The interiors unfold in a succession of fluid simplicity created by the contrast of painted walls and warm teak details. With French doors and large paned windows throughout, all the rooms have an immediate relationship with the outdoors, the cedar and stone terraces, and spectacular views of the Santa Lucia mountains.
