House and Long Barn, the Adirondacks

House and Long Barn, the Adirondacks

For the design of this house and barn located deep in a preserve, PPA looked to the longstanding tradition of the Adirondack Great Camp — modest camps that grew into self-sufficient compounds of rustic luxury set amid extensive acreage. In the spirit of Camp Santanoni on Newcomb Lake, PPA stained the shiplap cedar boards of the house black and used red trim to allow for it to project against the wooded surroundings. The texture and color of the cedar, timber and stone create a dynamic rhythm as the house bends with the contours of the site. The vaulted cedar-lined living room, anchored by a monumental fieldstone fireplace, is located at the center of the plan and the virtues of the natural materials — peeled logs, natural branches, and different species of wood — create a decorative effect throughout the interiors. The long barn marks the entrance to the compound and contains a bunkroom, staff quarters and a 5-bay garage.
