This facade is a powerful abstraction of Georgian-influenced architecture expressed in bold lines and stripped volumes in warm and varied materials. Exciting news for this fall! We are so excited about our forthcoming book with @vendomepress, Rowdy Meadow: House, Land, Art on the Czech-Cubist-inspired house we designed in Ohio. This project challenged us to design in an architectural language rooted in the Arts & Crafts style but also expressing the more aggressive massing and angular volumes of Czech Cubism, a fascinating and briefly-lived style (1911-14) and precursor to German Expressionism and Art Deco, marked by its exploration of prismatic forms. Inside, the house traces the evolution of modernism and is filled with masterpieces of Czech Cubism, the Wiener Werkstätte, French Art Deco, German Expressionism, contemporary design, and contemporary art. @reedhilderbrand thoughtfully restored and developed the 146-acre landscape and sculpture park, which includes 35 works by artists such as Richard Serra, Andy Goldsworthy, Sol Lewitt, Anish Kapor and Ai Weiwei. Good morning from ‘Sconset, seven miles away from Nantucket town, at the southeastern extreme of the island, where fishermen built temporary shelters for protection during the spring and fall cod-fishing seasons. The little structures began as one room shanties with dirt floors but over time the fishermen began to add to them with little additions called “warts” in all directions, floors were laid, old doors and windows of varying sizes which were no longer needed in town were used, parts of ships wrecked on the shoals around the island, and chimneys and fireplaces were added. #nantucket #sconset #siasconset #cottages #historichouse

The screened porch is conceived as a classical folly on the end of a new shingle style house we designed in Maine and Tuscan red piers contrast with the white washed shingle wall of the end of the house. Looking into the blue lacquered paneled dining roo

Looking into the blue lacquered paneled dining room of an Upper East Side apartment we gut-renovated and also decorated. We shifted axes to amplify flow, added paneling, raised door opening heights, lowered sills to elongate the windows, and added fresh finishes, such as pale oak floors. In this dining room, we carved out some extra ceiling height, creating a gold leafed cove, and installed pairs of mirrored harmon hinge doors...the pair at left opens into the family room and at right the doors conceal a bar. The harmon hinge doors in the foreground tuck into the walls and can close off the space from the living room. This new house in Ohio is inspired by the Arts & Crafts tradition but with a few rooms that aspire to the ample scale of rooms that look towards the Grand Tour and the Renaissance. In the soaring living room, a chinoiserie railing wraps an upper hallway which passes bridge-like between the upper levels of the entry hall and living room. We loved working on this project with our incredible clients and the team of @reddkaihoi and @hollander_design @ed_hollander who beautifully designed the grounds and landscape surrounding the house. Lindeberg’s Barberrys (1919) for Nelson Doubleday reflected his tendency to combine unexpected materials and forms...the whitewash of the brick walls could be Colonial Revival, but the gently sloping tiled roof and sgraffito around the door are more Mediterranean. We designed this new curved stone stair to connect two floors and create a duplex in a 1920s building on the Upper East Side. The new opening for the stair engages a south-facing window bringing light into both floors. The design channels some of the French stairs with closed stringers that we found in apartments in Paris.
