City | Country

IN PETER PENNOYER ARCHITECTS: CITY | COUNTRY, the first monograph of our firm’s work in more than 12 years, we look back on 19 projects from the last decade that take readers from urban townhouses and apartments to rural retreats, island abodes, and coastal homes. Written by architectural historian Anne Walker, the book is divided into two sections, City and Country, and whether in the city or countryside, each project reflects PPA’s imaginative interpretation of history and our commitment to instilling our work with an authentic sense of place.

The first section of the book, “City,” features residences designed with both history and the energy of urban life in mind, including a historic Greenwich Village townhouse with a restored, Italianate facade and new, Victorian era-inspired interiors; a triplex on the Ladies’ Mile of Fifth Avenue that was reconfigured from separate units into a graciously-scaled family apartment with a two-story cupola; and a riverfront Art Deco-inspired apartment whose rooms evoke Jazz Age glamor. In “Country,” romantic estates and coastal homes take center stage. Among the projects featured is an Arts & Crafts house in Ohio’s Chagrin River Valley that exemplifies classical rigor and weaves in threads of the local architectural heritage; a 17th-century Colonial guest house on Long Island whose painstaking restoration is a triumph of architectural preservation; and a rambling Shingle-style summer house, perched high on a bluff in Maine, its narrow plan allowing fresh air and sea breezes to blow through its rooms.

Ultimately, the extraordinary projects in City | Country embody the ethos that drives us: these are projects designed for today’s living that will endure as the result of scholarship, creative invention, high-quality craftsmanship, and rewarding collaborations with interior designers, landscape architects, builders, and artisans.
